In today’s professional working environment, communications are very much a part of every employee’s responsibilities. However, there are many barriers to communications and these may occur at any stage in the communication process. Barriers may lead to a message becoming distorted and staff members, by causing confusion and misunderstanding, can risk wasting both valuable time and financial resources to their organizations. Effective communication involves overcoming these barriers and conveying a clear and concise message.

This course is designed to teach students how to overcome the main barricade to active communication. During the course, participants learn how to remove barriers to effective listening, think before speaking, develop self control (don’t speak if you have nothing important to contribute), avoid interrupting when another person is speaking; and overall, they acquire the communication skills needed to excel at the workplace.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will have a sound understanding about:

  • The steps involved in the communication process
  • The process of integrating elements for effective communication including best practices and procedures
  • The principles of active listening
  • How to identify communication barriers (inherent to internal and external communications)
  • How to evaluate communication barriers
  • How to apply innovative strategies for improving engagement & collaboration
  • The importance of clear communication in the workplace environment
  • How to provide constructive feedback in order to coach an individual on a specific situation

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • By the end of this course, participants should be able to:
  • Assess communication barriers in order to identify ways to reduce or eliminate them
  • Remove barriers to effective listening
  • Practise active listening skills in order to improve communications
  • Utilize questioning skills and techniques to gather information in the workplace
  • Assess the type of communications to be used for effective dissemination of information within the organization depending on the purpose and direction
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers, team members, suppliers and customers
  • Develop stronger relationships using strategies to build rapport and trust
  • Unlock the participant’s potential as an effective communicator
